“Celebration” is one of those songs that everyone you know loves to sing along with. I don’t think that I’ve ever met anyone who doesn’t like it. Nobody can resist dancing around when they hear it. It’s the perfect song for every happy occasion. And it’s another anthem of the totally awesome 1980s skating party scene.
I never had this record back in the day, but my cousins in Detroit did. My middle sister and I were terribly jealous, because Angie and Tonya could listen to it whenever they wanted! This was in the early 80s when we couldn’t just tap a magic button on a stupidly expensive piece of electronic equipment and hear every song ever recorded. We had to either have the vinyl record, wait for it to be played on the radio, or see it on MTV. Whenever we visited our cousins we hoped they would play their 45 of “Celebration.” I just wanted to hear it over and over and over!
Seeing our cousins was always a celebration. We were very lucky to have so much extended family who we actually knew; most of my friends had never even met their cousins, which I always found strange. Being Serbian, we have cousins by the dozens, and we know them all. We saw our Detroit cousins four or five times a year, either at their house, our house, or our grandparents’ house in Cincinnati. Our cousins on our mother’s side went to church with us, so we saw them more regularly. It was always a lot of fun. There were no cell phones or iThings of any kind, so we could actually pay attention to each other and make up our own fun and games. Using our imagination was natural and important, and I know that we are all grateful that we were able to spend so much of our childhood together. It was a great time to grow up.
There’s a party goin’ on right here
A celebration to last throughout the years
So bring your good times and your laughter too
We gonna celebrate your party with you
Not only was this a favorite song for my cousins and sisters and me, but we roller skated our asses off to it at skating parties throughout elementary school. Like “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Celebration” is a song that never goes out of style! No matter how you felt at those parties, you rolled your Jordache-clad booty out onto that skating rink and let your perfectly feathered hair fly in the breeze as you swirled around to celebrate the good life when Kool & the Gang started to yahoo! You knew you were going to having a good time tonight. It’s a celebration, bitches!
